Tilly & The Buttons 'Bettine' Pattern
Since its launch in July 2015, the Bettine Dress by Tilly and the Buttons has been a firm favourite amongst us sewers here at The Sewing Shop. It is such a versatile dress and so comfortable to wear that we have run up quite a few between us and are still counting!
It has a blousy bodice with a flattering scoop neckline, kimono sleeves, elasticated waistline and tulip shaped skirt. There are options to include turn-up cuffs and to make either a plain skirt or one with two fabulous front pockets.
It works well with light to medium weight drapey fabrics such as viscose, cotton voile, lawn or chambray. We have also had great success with jersey and even a ponte knit.
The only alteration needed to the pattern when working with stretch fabric such as this ponte knit is to change the neckline facing to a biased edge instead. This can be secured in place using a twin needle or cover-stitch machine to create a really professional finish.
If this has inspired you and you want to make your own Bettine then why not join Annette on Saturday 11th June on one of our Learn to Sew Workshops. You will learn how to read a pattern, attach a neck facing and create an elasticated waist-casing. If you struggle getting patterns to fit Annette will also guide you through any fitting issues you may have. The Bettine pattern worth £12.50, is included in the workshop price. Further details can be found in our Workshop programme (copies available in store) and on our website. This workshop is also repeated later in the year on Saturday 22nd October. Please contact us to book your place.
